What is Adventure Racing?
Adventure Racing is one of the most unique sports in the world. I believe it is best described as "the sport of strategic wilderness travel." Adventure racing combines multiple sports into one race but links them together with navigation. Teams must strategize on how to get from point A to point B, whether to pursue C or skip right to G. The requirement of brain with brawn into a sport can make for some interesting final results. Projected winners can become losers with one big mistake, and weekend warriors can be victors with a perfectly strategized and executed race performance! It can truly be anyone's game until the final results are in! That's what is so special about the sport.
How do I get started?
Do you bike? Do you run or at least hike? Use these resources to find a short race, and go do it! Nearly every adventure racer I've met is welcoming and fun. Go meet the people, watch and listen, see what you learn, and go have fun! Adventure races have only as much pressure as you place on yourself. Is your goal to have fun? Just to finish? To run a flawless race? Or to win? You'll find folks with all of those goals, so there's no pressure to be able to keep up with the "big dogs" unless that's your goal.
What do I need?
The shorter the race, typically the less gear you will need. The basics would be a first aid kit, water, bike, helmet, and running shoes. Or you can get into 10 day races that may require 1000s of dollars worth of equipment. It simply depends on the race you desire to compete in. Here are some examples of gear lists for different race lengths. But each race can have different conditions and activities, so each race director will have a unique mandatory gear list. Choose your race, then make sure you have the gear needed. Or if you need a recommendation, check out the latest and greatest gear on this site.
